Treating Recipe for
"Texas Spalls and Tabs"
Follow these instructions to the "T"
and you'll have some really nicely heated flint.
Any deviation from this will result in blown flint!
That I can guarantee!
Be sure the kiln is packed full with NO room for
more stone. If you need to top the kiln off, get
anything of poor grade to fill it up, even a brick
will do! This insures that the flint will ramp up
and cool slow with limited air currents within the
kiln. (Which can blow up or crack your flint)
Take the flint up in temp slow and down slow, no
faster than 50 degrees an hour.
Hold time at 380 should be about 3 hours. (No need
to hold it longer)
The high grade Texas River cobbles, tabs and spalls
will heat out at a finished Temp of 380-420
Some of the lower grades will take around 500 and
will chip very nicely
What I mean is that you must take the flint to
the lower temp (430) first to prevent overheating
any higher grades.
Heat the spalls to 380.
For lesser grades 380-420. { Very thin tabs and
spalls may go a bit higher}
Do Not heat whole rocks or spalls thicker than
1 1/2 inch.
